Jerry D.
Scoggins enlisted in the U. S. Marine Corps on
November 27, 1958.
Following recruit
training at MCRD San Diego, CA, he was assigned
as a Machine Gunner with Company C,
1st Battalion, 7th
Marines, 1st Marine Division, Camp
Pendleton, CA. From September 1959 to July 1960,
he was assigned to Company A, 1st
Battalion, 9th Marines at Camp
Pendleton, CA. An overseas assignment took Jerry
to Company A, 1st Battalion,
3rd Marines, 3rd Marine
Division in Okinawa until August
1961.
Returning to the
States, Jerry was assigned to Headquarters
Company at MCRD, San Diego, CA where he was the
Admin Chief. His first assignment to recruiting
duty came in July 1966 when he was assigned to
MCRS Albuquerque, NM as the Public Affairs NCO.
In July 1968, Jerry reported to Headquarters,
III MAF in Vietnam. He returned to MCRS
Albuquerque in August 1969 as the PANCO. Upon
completion of that tour of duty, Jerry was
transferred to Okinawa where he served as the
Public Affairs Chief.
In October 1973,
Jerry was transferred to the Public Affairs
Office at Headquarters Marine Corps. In July
1977, Jerry reported to Recruiters' School at
MCRD San Diego, and upon successful completion
was assigned to RSS Albuquerque. During this
tour of duty, Jerry was also reassigned to RSS
Gallup, NM. In December 1979, he was reassigned
to MCRS, Honolulu, HI. From January 1981 to
August 1988, he had assignments in Public
Affairs at Headquarters, FMF Pacific, Honolulu,
HI; Marine Corps Base, Okinawa; and MCRD San
Diego, CA. He retired on August 1,
1988.
Jerry's
medals and awards include the Navy Achievement
Medal w/Combat V; Navy Commendation Medal
w/Combat V; Combat Action Ribbon; Presidential
Unit Citation; Meritorious Unit Commendation w/1
star; Good Conduct Medal (10 awards); National
Defense Service Medal (2 awards); Vietnam
Service Medal w/4 campaign stars; Vietnam
Campaign Medal w/device; RVN Cross of Gallantry
w/palm; Overseas Service Medal; and the
Recruiter Ribbon. Jerry's military
education/training includes: NCO Leadership
School; Admin Chief's School; Informational
Specialist; Newspaper Editors Course;
Photojournalist Course; and Recruiters'
School.
Jerry
graduated from Point Loma High School in San
Diego and earned an Associate Degree in General
Studies from the United States Armed Forces
Institute in Madison, WI.
Jerry
is a member of the VFW where he holds the
position of Chaplain, The American Legion; the
DAV; Masons; Shriners; Marine Corps League; Old
Asian Hands; Marine Monday Nite Mustard; Fleet
Reserve Association. He has also been involved
as the Director of the St. Patrick's Day Parade
and festivities in Albuquerque, as well as
Director of the Southwest Chili Pepper Golf
Classic. He is also a member of the New Mexico
Seniors Golf Association. Jerry has also been
involved as the Director for the Toys for Tots
Program and has participated as a planner for
the first Marine Corps Marathon. Jerry and his
wife Bea, currently reside in Albuquerque,
NM.
